Reflexology is a safe alternative treatment that can help during pregnancy and induce labor naturally. It involves the application of gentle pressure on certain areas of the feet. These areas, called reflex zones, are connected to other parts of the body. This pressure stimulates nerve endings, which can cause uterine contractions, thus inducing labor naturally.

How successful is reflexology for inducing labor?
There is no guarantee that reflexology can always induce labor naturally as there are not many evidence-based results to prove the same. Unlike medical induction, reflexology cannot force the body into labor.
However, it can condition your body to become ready for natural labor.
It can be combined with medical induction, and used a day or two before the same, to reduce the stress of induction.
Reflexology can also reduce the pain experienced during labor.
It may reduce the length of labor too. Women may experience a calming effect, thanks to the relaxation of muscles and improved energy levels.
Reflexology sessions
Every mom-to-be is different and will need a varying amount of therapy. So, keep the following in mind:
Reflexology sessions done during pregnancy can have a cumulative effect and may reduce the need for medical induction and also shorten the labor period.
If you are opting for it when you are close to delivery, sessions can be conducted 1-2 times a week, starting around 37 to 38 weeks of pregnancy.
In women who are past their due date, a longer session can be undertaken until contractions begin.
Reflexology points
There are a few pressure points on the feet that are tended to during reflexology sessions. One important point in the centers of your big toes. It is connected to the pituitary gland. Stimulation of this point, by application of pressure, can lead to the release of the oxytocin hormone, which in turn can cause contraction of the uterus.
Pressure can be applied for a few minutes at a time and then released. This process is repeated.
Situations where reflexology might not be used
Your doctor might advise against the use of reflexology in case:
1. You have a history of miscarriage
2. Are at a risk of developing preeclampsia
3. Are prone to vomiting
4. Experiencing bleeding problems and Deep Vein Thrombosis
Hence, based on your doctor’s advice, you can get help from a qualified reflexology practitioner to start labor naturally.
