You must have forgotten your wedding anniversary recently. Or you’ve put the door or car keys in unexpected places. If you’re facing these problems during the later stage of your pregnancy, this condition is known as “pregnancy brain” or “momnesia”. Pregnancy has changed you both physically and mentally. Right?
The reasons behind making you forget during pregnancy include:
Hormonal Changes
It's common knowledge that pregnancy hormones can cause a range of issues. Difficulty recalling the name of your favorite novel is likely not your fault, as it can be attributed to the impact of hormones on brain neurons.
Pregnancy insomnia
The challenges that come with pregnancy, include the impact on sleep and cognitive functions. It's common for pregnant individuals to experience disruptions in sleep due to physical discomfort and other symptoms. These challenges can indeed affect memory and cognitive abilities, making it important to find ways to prioritize rest and self-care during pregnancy.
Stress and anxiety
It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and overwhelm as you prepare for the arrival of your baby. Setting up the nursery, baby-proofing the house, and managing all the prenatal appointments can be a lot to handle. It's important to remember to take some time for yourself and lean on your support system during this busy and emotional time. Everything will come together, and you're doing a great job getting prepared.
Changing brain structure
It's fascinating how the brain undergoes so many changes at the cellular level, especially during pregnancy. The fact that the grey matter declines significantly in pregnant women, potentially affecting social cognition, is truly remarkable. It's intriguing to consider that these changes might be related to creating space for maternal attachment.
Don’t worry! The fog of memory loss usually clears up around six months after birth. So, hold on to your horse until you hold your baby.
However, maintain a calendar, diary, or planner for you to remember everything. Set reminder alarms. Keep the keys and pieces of jewellery together. Be active. Eat healthy. Ask for help.
Just a little forgetfulness is normal during pregnancy but if you feel like you are experiencing an excessive level of memory issues, it's important to consult your healthcare practitioner without delay. Your healthcare provider can help determine if there are any underlying concerns and provide guidance on managing any memory-related challenges you may be experiencing.
